At the opening of our student exhibit “EN PLEIN AIR” at Corridoio Fiorentino on Thursday, May 31st, FUA Alum Meagan Ratliff-Phillips performed 3 stunning pieces of music at the event to end the semester.

To prepare for this performance, Meagan took the Private Voice Coach course at FUA with professor Susanna Piccardi.  This course helps students work on their personal goals as a singer and a performer.

The lessons focus on main objectives such as music theory, artistic performances, critique, and musical culture and musicianship. Throughout the course, students are given assignments to develop knowledge in music as a field and specific pieces and authors introduced by the subject. Furthermore, performance practice is implemented on a regular basis.

Meagan spoke with our Communications department about her experience during her three week summer session in Florence.

What class did you take at FUA?

Private Voice Coach

How would you describe your experience in Florence?

Very humbling! I experienced more history in my short amount of time in Florence than I have in my entire life! It was absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to come back in the future!

What was your favorite part of the course?

It was nice to have a lesson every single day as opposed to just once a week. I made progress so much quicker having a lesson everyday.

How has this class helped you evolve as an artist?

I have become more confident in my classical performance and have gotten to know my voice better as a singer.

Would you recommend this class to others and why?

Yes, if you are looking to further develop your vocal skills, this is the opportunity of a lifetime! Anyone who is serious about singing should definitely consider this course.

Favorite musical piece to perform?

O Del Mio Dolce Ardor by Christoph Willibald Gluck

Future editions of the course at FUA can be consulted at the academic schedule of courses.
